Question

Is the following formula suitable for making pomade, and is an Emulsifier needed?

  • Beeswax
  • Paraffin wax
  • Coconut Oil
  • Dimethicone
  • Mild Preserved Eco

Answer

Based on the ingredients you listed (Beeswax, Paraffin wax, Fractionated Coconut Oil, Dimethicone, and Mild Preserved Eco), these can indeed form a basic pomade structure.

  • Waxes (Beeswax, Paraffin wax): Provide structure, hold, and consistency.
  • Oil (Fractionated Coconut Oil): Acts as the base oil, providing emolliency and helping to dissolve waxes.
  • Silicone (Dimethicone): Can add slip, shine, and a smooth feel.
  • Preservative (Mild Preserved Eco): Necessary if any water is introduced, or to protect the ingredients themselves from microbial growth over time.

Regarding whether an emulsifier is needed:

  • If you intend to make a traditional, anhydrous (water-free) pomade using only the waxes, oils, silicone, and preservative, an emulsifier is not strictly necessary. The waxes and oils will blend together when heated and solidify upon cooling.
  • However, if you plan to add water to your formulation to create a water-based pomade (which is often easier to wash out), then an emulsifier is required to bind the oil/wax phase with the water phase and prevent separation.

The suitability of this formula depends on the specific ratios of ingredients you plan to use and the desired properties of the final pomade (e.g., hold strength, texture, feel).
