Using Preservatives in Eye Creams

Reducing the concentration of preservatives in eye creams to 0.5-0.75% from the typical 1-1.5% is an acceptable approach, primarily because the skin around the eyes is very delicate and prone to irritation from higher preservative levels.

Key factors that allow for a lower preservative concentration while maintaining microbial safety include:

• Packaging: Using secure packaging like airless pumps significantly reduces the chance of microbial contamination compared to jars where fingers are repeatedly dipped.
• Preservative Boosters: Incorporating ingredients from the glycol group, such as Propylene Glycol, Ethoxydiglycol, or Pentylene Glycol, can enhance the effectiveness of the preservative system, allowing for a lower concentration of the main preservative.
• Selecting Suitable Preservatives: It is crucial to choose preservatives specifically designed for sensitive areas, such as Eye Preserved™ (Polyhexamethylene Biguanide, PHMB), which is developed for contact lens solutions and is gentle enough for the eye area.

While reducing the amount of preservative is beneficial for minimizing irritation, it is essential to ensure the formulation remains protected from microbial growth. A Challenge Test is always recommended to confirm the efficacy and suitability of the preservative system in the final product formulation and packaging.
