Preventing Precipitation of BioSulphur™ EQ in Water-Based Essence
Question
I am formulating a purely water-based essence (containing no oil phase). When adding the ingredient BioSulphur™ EQ (Water Soluble Sulfur), the formula experiences precipitation/sedimentation.
What ingredient or method should I use to prevent the precipitation of BioSulphur™ EQ (Water Soluble Sulfur) in this purely water-based essence?
Answer
The precipitation of BioSulphur™ EQ (Water Soluble Sulfur) (Ichthammol) in a purely water-based essence is likely due to the complex nature of the Ichthammol component, which can precipitate out of solution, especially if the concentration is high or if there are other electrolytes (salts) present in the formula.
The most effective solution to prevent this sedimentation is to use a suspending agent to increase the viscosity of the essence. This will help keep the BioSulphur™ EQ particles dispersed and prevent them from settling at the bottom.
Recommendation
Use a Suspending Polymer (Thickener):
- We recommend using a clear-gel-type thickener such as Xanthan Gum (clear gel type, smooth texture) (ID: 216) at a concentration of 0.1% to 0.5%.
- Method: Disperse the Xanthan Gum in the water phase first, allow it to hydrate fully to form a stable gel, and then incorporate the BioSulphur™ EQ. The resulting gel structure will physically hold the BioSulphur™ EQ particles in suspension.
Check and Adjust pH:
- While BioSulphur™ EQ is stable across a wide pH range (2-11), ensure the final pH of your essence is stable, typically in the range of pH 4.5 to 6.5. Extreme pH values can sometimes destabilize complex ingredients like Ichthammol.
Reduce Concentration (If necessary):
- If the precipitation persists even with a suspending agent, consider slightly reducing the concentration of BioSulphur™ EQ. High concentrations increase the risk of precipitation.
