Question

I am making a lip balm in a pot using Fractionated Coconut Oil as the main ingredient. After using it for a while, it develops a rancid smell. Could you please recommend a suitable antioxidant or preservative?

Answer

Preventing Rancidity in Lip Balm with Fractionated Coconut Oil

It's common for oils, even Fractionated Coconut Oil, to eventually oxidize and develop a rancid smell, especially in a product like lip balm that is frequently opened and exposed to air. To prevent this, you need to add an antioxidant to your formulation. Antioxidants help to slow down the oxidation process in oils.

Preservatives (สารกันเสีย) are used to prevent microbial growth (bacteria, mold, yeast) and are generally not necessary for anhydrous (oil-based) products like lip balm unless water is introduced during use or manufacturing. Your primary need is an antioxidant (สารกันหืน).

Here are some suitable oil-soluble antioxidants you can consider adding to your lip balm formula:

  • Vitamin E (Tocopheryl Acetate or dl-alpha tocopherol): These are common antioxidants for oil-based products. They help protect the oils from oxidation. Use at a low concentration (e.g., 0.01% is often sufficient for protecting oils).
  • Rosemary Oleoresin Extract (ROE): A natural extract known for its strong antioxidant properties. It is particularly effective when used in combination with Vitamin E. Be aware that ROE has a dark color and a distinct rosemary scent, which might affect your lip balm.
  • Protec™ OX: A highly effective synthetic antioxidant. It is more potent than Vitamin E or Rosemary Extract but requires heating (70-80°C) to dissolve in oil.
  • Dimethylmethoxy Chromanol: Another highly effective antioxidant for protecting natural oils from deterioration. It is used at a 1% concentration in oil-based formulas.

Choose an antioxidant based on your preference for natural vs. synthetic ingredients, desired effectiveness, cost, and whether the ingredient's color or smell will impact your final product. Adding one of these antioxidants will significantly extend the shelf life of your lip balm and prevent the development of rancidity.
