Purple colorant for oil/silicone hair coat: Solubility and precipitation issue

Question

I need to add purple color to a hair coat product. The formula contains Fractionated Coconut Oil, Cyclopentasiloxane, Dimethicone (Silicone oil 350), and Fragrance. I need a colorant that dissolves completely and does not precipitate. I tried a color claimed to be oil-soluble, but it precipitated. What colorant can I use?

Answer

Based on your hair coat formulation containing oils and silicones, you need a colorant that is soluble in oil or silicone. Pigments, even those labeled for oil dispersion, will not truly dissolve and can precipitate over time, which matches your experience.

We searched for purple colorants, but the results primarily show water-soluble dyes or pigments. Water-soluble dyes are not suitable for your oil-based formula. The pigments found are also not expected to dissolve completely and will likely precipitate.

Finding a truly oil-soluble purple dye that fully dissolves without precipitation in an oil/silicone blend can be challenging. Based on the available information from the search, we cannot recommend a specific purple colorant that guarantees complete dissolution in your formula.
