Questions about Gel Formulation (Pro Polymer), Preservatives, and Ingredient Calculation

Question

I have two questions regarding cosmetic formulation:

  1. Gel Formulation with Rose Water and Pro Polymer:

    • My formula uses 94% Rose Water (which already contains a preservative from the manufacturer).
    • I plan to add Phenonip® P4 as an additional preservative.
    • Is it necessary to add Phenonip® P4 given the high percentage of preserved Rose Water?
    • When adding Pro Polymer, the mixture becomes cloudy. How can I make the resulting gel clear?
  2. Ingredient Calculation:

    • How do I calculate 5% of 10g for a liquid ingredient like Hyaluronic Acid?

Answer

Regarding your questions:

  1. Preservative: Based on the staff's reply, the Rose Water you used already contains a preservative from the manufacturer. Since your formula uses 94% Rose Water, you do not need to add an additional preservative like Phenonip® P4.

  2. Pro Polymer Cloudiness: The staff indicated that the cloudiness when adding Pro Polymer is likely due to insufficient mixing. You should continue stirring or blending until the white powder fully dissolves. The resulting gel should be clear.

Regarding the second question from another user about calculating 5% of 10g of liquid Hyaluronic Acid:

To calculate 5% of 10g, you multiply 10g by 5% (or 0.05). So, 5% of 10g is 10g * 0.05 = 0.5g. You would use 0.5g of the liquid Hyaluronic Acid and mix it with Rose Water as intended. The staff also recommended reviewing basic mixing and calculation guides for more information.
