Question

I am formulating a cream containing Retinal (Retinaldehyde) at a concentration of 0.05%.

  1. For a small batch size of 10g that will be used up within 2 weeks, can a regular cream jar be used as packaging? Or is it necessary to use airless jars or pointed-tip cream tubes only?
  2. Can the cream formulated with Retinal be used during the day? I would like to use the cream both day and night, but I want to include Retinal. Will it be harmful to the skin if used during the day, or will the substance simply become ineffective due to degradation from light exposure?

Answer

Regarding your questions about using Retinal (Retinaldehyde) in your cream formulation:

  1. Packaging: For a 10g batch at 0.05% concentration used within 2 weeks, a regular cream jar can be used. However, it is crucial to store the product in the refrigerator and avoid all exposure to light to maintain the ingredient's stability.
  2. Daytime Use: Products containing Retinal can be used during the day. The ingredient does not degrade instantly upon light exposure when applied to the skin, so you can use the cream both day and night without issues.
