Question

I am making a serum using these two ingredients to replace Licorice Extract: Orange Peel Extract and Lemon Peel Bioferment (Lemon Skin™).

Question 1: Can these two ingredients be used during the day?

Question 2: These two ingredients and other listed ingredients need refrigeration for storage. If the finished serum is not refrigerated by the customer but kept away from sunlight, will it spoil? I am using this preservative: Probio-Protect™ (Lactobacillus Ferment Preservative). Other ingredients listed that need refrigeration include Repair Activator™ Powder (Bifida Ferment Lysate) and Quick-Coll® (Copper Lysinate Prolinate).

Serum Formulation Questions

Here are the answers to your questions regarding your serum formulation:

Question 1: Can Licorice Extract and Orange Peel Extract be used during the day?

Yes, both Licorice Extract and Orange Peel Extract can generally be used in serums applied during the day.

  • Licorice Extract is known for its anti-inflammatory and oil-reducing properties, which are beneficial for daytime use.
  • Orange Peel Extract helps stimulate blood circulation and has anti-glycation effects. While it might cause a slight warming sensation, this does not restrict its use to nighttime.

As with any skincare product used during the day, it is highly recommended to follow up with a broad-spectrum sunscreen to protect your skin from UV damage.

Question 2: Shelf life if not refrigerated but kept away from sun?

Your serum contains several ingredients that are recommended for refrigeration for long-term storage in their raw form, including Licorice Extract, Lemon Peel Bioferment, Repair Activator, and Quick-Coll. You are using Probio-Protect as a preservative.

  • Probio-Protect is effective at preventing microbial growth and spoilage, and it can be stored at room temperature away from direct sunlight.
  • However, the stability and efficacy of the active ingredients that require refrigeration (Licorice Extract, Lemon Peel Bioferment, Repair Activator, Quick-Coll) may decrease more rapidly if the finished serum is stored at room temperature compared to being refrigerated.

While keeping the serum away from sunlight and heat is important, it is not a substitute for refrigeration for ingredients that are sensitive to temperature. For optimal shelf life and to maintain the full potency of these specific active ingredients, storing the finished serum in the refrigerator is strongly recommended, especially if the customer will not be using it quickly.

To determine the exact shelf life and stability of your specific formulation at room temperature, a challenge test and stability testing would be necessary.
