Question

I am making a serum with the following ingredients:

Formula 1:

  1. DMAE (SkinTight MD™) Liquid 3%
  2. WhiteCumin™ 2x 3%
  3. 4D Hyaluronic Acid 10%
  4. Licorice Extract 2%
  5. GlucoBright™ 4%
  6. Safe-B3™ 5%
  7. Horse Placenta 2%
  8. Alpha Arbutin 2%
  9. Water 69%

Formula 2:

  1. DMAE (SkinTight MD™) Liquid 3%
  2. WhiteCumin™ 2x 3%
  3. 4D Hyaluronic Acid 10%
  4. Licorice Extract 2%
  5. Alpha Arbutin 2%
  6. Water %(remaining)

I would like to know if these formulations are possible without adding a preservative. If not, which preservative should I use and how should I adjust the formula?

Answer

Based on your serum formulations, which are primarily water-based, it is essential to include a preservative system. Water provides an environment where bacteria, mold, and yeast can easily grow, leading to product spoilage, reduced effectiveness, and potential skin irritation or infection. Therefore, making these serums without a preservative is not recommended for safety and stability.

You will need to add a suitable preservative to your formulas and adjust the percentage of water accordingly. For example, if you add 1% preservative, you would reduce the water percentage by 1%.

Here are a couple of suitable preservative options from our range:

  • Mild Preserved™ COS (ID: 33939): This is a broad-spectrum, water-soluble preservative that works well in a wide pH range (2-8) and is odorless. It's a versatile choice for various serum formulations. Recommended usage rate is 0.75-1.5%.
  • Probio-Protect™ (ID: 7445): This is a probiotic-based preservative that allows for a "preservative-free" claim. It dissolves in water and should be added without heat. It also offers moisturizing benefits. Recommended usage rate is 2.0%.

When selecting a preservative, always consider the recommended usage rate and the optimal pH range for the preservative to ensure it is effective in your final formulation. It is also highly recommended to perform a challenge test on your finished product to confirm the preservative system is effective against microbial growth under realistic storage and usage conditions.

Your formulas contain several beneficial active ingredients:

By adding a suitable preservative, you can ensure the safety and longevity of your serum while benefiting from the combined effects of these active ingredients.
