Shampoo Mixing Order and Conditioner Formulation/Texture

Asked by: oong12 On: March 07, 2017 Product Type: Cosmetics

Question

Could you please confirm the mixing order for the shampoo formula previously recommended by the staff? Additionally, I have an original conditioner formula with the following ingredients:

  • Water (remaining %)
  • BTAC 1%
  • CTAC 1%
  • Biotin 1%
  • Vitamin B5 0.5%
  • Phenoxyethanol SA 1%

The texture of this conditioner is not thick enough. Could you advise on the issues with this formulation and suggest an adjusted formula to achieve a thicker, more appropriate texture for a conditioner?

Answer

Hello,

Regarding your questions about the mixing order for the shampoo and your original conditioner formula, I have the following information:

For the mixing order of the shampoo formula recommended by the staff, the steps are as follows:

  1. Add the Sulfate Free Shampoo Base to the Water. Stir until combined.
  2. Add Biotin Express™, Allantoin, and Vitamin B5. Stir until dissolved/dispersed.
  3. Add Phenoxyethanol SA. Stir well.

Regarding your original conditioner formula, the concentration of BTAC at 1% is too low to achieve a sufficiently thick cream texture typical for conditioners. Also, CTAC is redundant with BTAC and is not necessary.

The staff still recommends using BTAC at 3-5% together with Cetearyl Alcohol 5% to achieve an appropriate cream texture. An example of the adjusted formula based on this recommendation (using 4% BTAC) is as follows:

  • Water (remaining %)
  • BTAC 4%
  • Cetearyl Alcohol 5%
  • Biotin 1%
  • Vitamin B5 0.5%
  • Phenoxyethanol SA 1%

Mixing instructions for the adjusted conditioner formula:

  1. Heat the Water to approximately 70-80°C.
  2. Add BTAC and Cetearyl Alcohol to the hot water. Stir until fully dissolved and emulsified into a homogeneous mixture.
  3. Remove from heat and stir occasionally until the temperature drops below 40°C.
  4. Then add Biotin, Vitamin B5, and Phenoxyethanol SA.
  5. Stir all ingredients thoroughly until well combined.

Regarding the hair spray formula, the staff already provided recommendations in the previous message.
