Question

My Shower Oil formulation changed color from yellow to orange-pink. How can I prevent this color change? Also, how can I thicken the Shower Oil without using heat?

Answer

Shower Oil Color Change and Thickening

Regarding the color change of your shower oil formulation from yellow to orange-pink, this is likely due to the natural oils you are using. Natural oils, especially cold-pressed or virgin varieties like Grape Seed Oil, Rice Bran Oil, Virgin Coconut Oil, Avocado Oil, and Olive Oil, contain natural pigments and other compounds. Over time, these compounds can oxidize when exposed to air, light, or heat, leading to a change in color, often towards pink, orange, or red tones. As you observed, Virgin Coconut Oil can sometimes show a more pronounced color change.

To minimize color change:

  • Consider using refined versions of natural oils, which have had more impurities removed and are generally more stable.
  • Add an antioxidant to the oil phase to help slow down the oxidation process.
  • Store the finished product in a cool, dark place away from direct sunlight and air exposure.

Regarding thickening the shower oil without heat, the staff's recommendation of Oil-Fix is suitable. Oil-Fix is designed to thicken oil-based formulas at room temperature.

To use Oil-Fix:

  1. Add Oil-Fix to the oil phase of your formulation.
  2. Mix thoroughly until the Oil-Fix is completely dispersed and the mixture becomes clear and thickened.

Use Oil-Fix at a concentration of 2-5%, depending on the desired viscosity.
