Question

I need a silicone that is 100% water-insoluble or minimally water-soluble to mix into the water phase to create separate layers. Could you recommend which Silicone product I should use?

Answer

Silicone for Water Separation

For creating a separate layer in a water-based formulation using a silicone that is insoluble or minimally soluble in water, consider silicones dissolved in non-polar solvents. These types of silicones will not mix with the water phase, resulting in a distinct layer.

Suitable options include:

  • Silicone Film (Soft Film, Low Viscosity, Isododecane Base): This product contains a silicone film dissolved in Isododecane, a non-polar solvent. It is insoluble in water and will form a separate layer.
  • Silicone Film (Soft Film, Low Viscosity, Cyclopentasiloxane Base): Similar to the above, this product features a silicone film dissolved in Cyclopentasiloxane, another non-polar solvent. It is also insoluble in water and suitable for creating a separate layer.

Both of these silicones are designed to be soluble in oils or other silicones, not water, which facilitates the formation of a separate phase in a water-based system.
