Skin Absorption of Prebio-care with Penetration Enhancer
Question
In a cosmetic formulation containing Prebio-care (Alpha-Glucan Oligosaccharide) and a penetration enhancer, will the Prebio-care absorb into the skin?
Answer
Prebio-care (Alpha-Glucan Oligosaccharide) is a skin prebiotic. Its main function is to support the beneficial microorganisms on the surface of your skin (the skin microbiome). Prebiotics like Prebio-care primarily work in the stratum corneum and epidermis, where the skin microbiota resides. Deep penetration into the dermis is generally not necessary for its function.
While penetration enhancers are designed to help ingredients absorb into the skin, the effectiveness depends on the specific ingredient's properties (like size and solubility). Alpha-Glucan Oligosaccharide is a relatively large sugar molecule. While a penetration enhancer might help it reach slightly deeper layers within the epidermis, it is unlikely to cause significant penetration into the dermis, and more importantly, deep penetration is not required for Prebio-care to perform its role of feeding the skin's beneficial bacteria.
Therefore, even with a penetration enhancer, Prebio-care will primarily exert its effects on the skin surface and upper epidermal layers, which is exactly where it needs to be to support the skin microbiome. Its function is not dependent on deep absorption.
