Question
What are the differences in properties between low, medium, and high melting point soy wax? Which type is suitable for making regular scented candles (not for skin use)?
Answer
Soy wax with different melting points has properties suitable for different uses. Generally:
- Low Melting Point Soy Wax: Tends to be softer, adheres well to containers, and provides better "Hot Throw" (the diffusion of fragrance when the candle is lit). This is because the surface temperature of the melted wax is not too high, allowing the fragrance to evaporate effectively. It is ideal for making container candles.
- Medium Melting Point Soy Wax: Has properties between low and high melting points. It can be used more versatilely depending on the formulation and may be blended with other waxes to adjust properties.
- High Melting Point Soy Wax: Is harder and has a more stable structure, making it suitable for making pillar candles or free-standing candles that do not require a container. However, it may provide less Hot Throw compared to low melting point types.
For regular scented candles made in containers (not for skin use), Low Melting Point Soy Wax is the most popular and suitable choice. This is because it helps the candle have a smooth surface, adheres well to glass, and importantly, provides good fragrance diffusion when lit.
