Stability and Rancidity of Various Oils
Question
I want to inquire which of these oils go rancid quickly? I want oils that do not go rancid quickly. I previously bought Sweet Almond Oil and had to use it quickly; it went rancid before I could finish it. However, Squalane oil did not go rancid at all. Therefore, I would like to know if the following oils will go rancid quickly: Jojoba Oil (Golden Deodorized), Avocado Oil Refined, Grape Seed Oil, Meadowfoam Seed Oil. Thank you.
Answer
Based on your experience and the properties of the oils you mentioned:
Sweet Almond Oil, like many oils high in polyunsaturated fatty acids, is prone to oxidation and can go rancid relatively quickly, especially if not stored properly.
Squalane, being a saturated hydrocarbon, is very stable and highly resistant to oxidation, which is why you found it does not go rancid.
Regarding the other oils you asked about:
- Jojoba Oil (Golden - Deodorized): This is technically a liquid wax ester, not a true triglyceride oil. Its chemical structure makes it exceptionally stable and resistant to rancidity. The product description confirms it is "Rancid-Free" and has a shelf life of 2 years under optimum conditions. This oil is a good choice if you want something very stable like Squalane.
- Avocado Oil (Refined): Refined Avocado Oil has better stability than virgin avocado oil. It contains a mix of monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fatty acids. While not as stable as Jojoba Oil or Squalane, it has reasonable stability. The product description indicates a shelf life of 2 years from the production date.
- Grape Seed Oil: This oil is high in polyunsaturated fatty acids (specifically Linoleic Acid), similar to Sweet Almond Oil. Oils with a high percentage of polyunsaturated fats are more susceptible to oxidation and tend to go rancid more quickly than oils high in monounsaturated or saturated fats.
- Meadowfoam Seed Oil: While I couldn't retrieve specific product details for Meadowfoam Seed Oil from the available information, it is generally known in formulation for its excellent oxidative stability due to its unique fatty acid composition, which is low in polyunsaturated fats. It is often used to enhance the stability of other less stable oils in a blend.
In summary, if you are looking for oils that are less likely to go rancid quickly, similar to Squalane, Jojoba Oil is an excellent option due to its inherent stability. Avocado Oil also offers reasonable stability with a stated 2-year shelf life. Grape Seed Oil, like Sweet Almond Oil, is more prone to rancidity. Meadowfoam Seed Oil is also generally known for good stability.
