Question

I have a sunscreen formulation with Titanium Dioxide and Zinc Oxide. I have two questions:

  1. Can I substitute Safe-B3™ (Vitamin B3, Niacinamide) with Aloe Vera Extract (extraction ratio 10:1 FullAssay™) at the same quantity?
  2. Can Encapsulated Salicylic Acid (Liquid, Timed-Release, Wash-Off) be mixed directly with plain water for exfoliation?

Answer

Sunscreen Formulation Advice

Based on your formulation and the discussion:

Your base formulation with Titanium Dioxide and Zinc Oxide provides good sun protection. Adding ingredients like Silica can improve the aesthetic feel and performance for makeup-like effects.

Encapsulated Salicylic Acid and Water

Regarding mixing Encapsulated Salicylic Acid (Liquid, Timed-Release, Wash-Off) with plain water for exfoliation:

  • Yes, you can mix Encapsulated Salicylic Acid directly with water.
  • Important Considerations: Since this mixture would be prone to microbial growth, you must either include a preservative in the formulation or store it in the refrigerator and use it very quickly. Ensure all mixing processes are highly hygienic to prevent contamination.
  • Note that the description for Encapsulated Salicylic Acid (Liquid, Timed-Release, Wash-Off) indicates it is primarily for wash-off products. If you intend to leave the product on the skin, you should consider using a different type of Encapsulated Salicylic Acid designed for leave-on applications.
  • Also, be aware that Encapsulated Salicylic Acid is incompatible with certain thickeners and bases, including Light Cream Maker™ and Aloe Vera Gel/Hyaluronic Gel. If you were to incorporate it into a more complex formula, you would need to choose compatible ingredients.

Remember to always test new formulations on a small area first.
