Troubleshooting Oil Gel Setting in Massage Balms with High Menthol and Camphor

The issue where Maxagel™ EP fails to set when mixed with high concentrations of Menthol, Camphor, and Eucalyptus oil is primarily due to the Eutectic Mixture phenomenon and high solvent load.

When Menthol and Camphor are combined, they liquefy into a "eutectic" oil. This liquid, along with the Eucalyptus oil, acts as a strong solvent that can disrupt the polymer network of the gelling agent, causing the formula to remain liquid or lose its structure.

To ensure your balm sets correctly, here are the recommended solutions:

1. Increase the Concentration of Maxagel™ EP

If you want to maintain a gel-like consistency, you may need to increase the percentage of Maxagel™ EP. A higher concentration of the polymer is required to create a network strong enough to "trap" and structure a high volume of liquid solvents.

2. Add Microcrystalline Wax (Highly Recommended)

For a traditional "balm" texture that contains high amounts of volatile oils and menthol/camphor, relying solely on an oil gellant is often insufficient. Adding a structuring wax is the most effective solution:

• Microcrystalline Wax (ID: 9876) is superior to natural waxes for this application because it has a high affinity for oils and can create a stable matrix that prevents "sweating" (oil separation).
• Usage Rate: Try adding 5-15% depending on the desired hardness of the balm.

3. Adjust the Mixing Process

• Order of Addition: Melt the Maxagel™ EP and any waxes together first (around 70-80°C) until uniform.
• Cool Down Phase: Menthol, Camphor, and Eucalyptus oil are volatile. Add them to the base when the temperature has dropped slightly but is still fluid enough to mix (around 50-60°C). This helps prevent the active ingredients from evaporating while ensuring they are thoroughly incorporated before the balm sets.
