Using Astaxanthin Powder in Toner: Mixing & Staining
Question
Can Astaxanthin (2% Water Dispersed Powder) be used in a toner formulation? What are the mixing steps, and will it cause skin staining?
Answer
Using Astaxanthin (2% Water Dispersed Powder) in Toner
Yes, you can use Astaxanthin (2.0% Algae Extract, Water Dispersed Powder) in a toner formulation. This product is designed to be dispersed in water, making it suitable for water-based products like toners.
Mixing Instructions
To incorporate Astaxanthin (2.0% Algae Extract, Water Dispersed Powder) into your toner formula, follow these steps:
- Prepare your toner base according to your recipe.
- In the final step of your formulation process, ensure the temperature of the toner base is below 40°C.
- Add the Astaxanthin powder to the toner base and disperse thoroughly. Since it is a dispersed powder, it will create a semi-liquid consistency when mixed.
- To help prevent degradation of the Astaxanthin, it is recommended to add ActiveProtec OX at 0.5% and ActiveProtec UV at 1% to your formula.
Color and Skin Staining
Astaxanthin is a natural pigment with a strong red/orange color. When used in a toner, it will impart a color to the product. While the product is designed to be dispersed, there is a possibility that it could leave a temporary orange tint on the skin, especially if used at higher concentrations or if not fully absorbed/dispersed during application. This is a characteristic of Astaxanthin due to its natural color.
