Question

I would like to ask about making a disinfectant spray.

  • Can we directly dissolve Chloroxylenol (PCMX) in Alcohol and use it alone?
  • What percentage should be used?

Answer

Using Chloroxylenol (PCMX) in a Disinfectant Spray

You can use Chloroxylenol (PCMX) to make a disinfectant spray.

  • Solubility in Alcohol: The Chloroxylenol (PCMX) (100% Powder) form is soluble in alcohol. You can dissolve this powder directly in alcohol. The Chloroxylenol (PCMX) (15% Water Soluble) form is designed to dissolve in water.
  • Using it Alone: Chloroxylenol is the primary active disinfectant ingredient. While it is the key component, achieving optimal disinfection efficiency might involve more complex formulations than just dissolving it in a solvent. The product description for the 100% powder notes that it might not be suitable for direct use in self-made formulas if disinfection efficiency is critical.
  • Usage Percentage: For killing Coronavirus, a concentration of 0.12% of the 100% powder is recommended (equivalent to 0.8% of the 15% Water Soluble type). For hand disinfectant products, a rate of 0.2% of the 100% powder is recommended. Commercial products like Dettol use Chloroxylenol at a higher rate of 4.80%. The appropriate percentage depends on the target microorganisms and desired contact time.
