Question

I would like to know if Essential Oils can be used to lower the pH.

The current pH is 7.5, and I want to lower it slightly below 7. However, I do not want to use chemical substances or citric acid.

Can scents that are acidic help lower the pH?

Answer

Can Essential Oils Adjust pH?

Essential oils are generally not effective for adjusting the pH of a formulation. pH is a measure of the acidity or alkalinity of a water-based solution. Essential oils are lipophilic (oil-soluble) and do not readily release hydrogen ions into the water phase, which is necessary to lower pH.

The scent of an essential oil, even if it smells acidic (like citrus oils), does not mean it will lower the pH of your product. The compounds responsible for the scent are different from the acidic compounds used for pH adjustment.

To lower the pH of a formulation from 7.5 to below 7, you typically need to use an acidic ingredient that is soluble and active in the water phase. Common cosmetic pH adjusters include ingredients like lactic acid, glycolic acid, or citric acid (which you mentioned you want to avoid). These substances work by releasing hydrogen ions into the solution, thereby increasing acidity and lowering the pH.

Since essential oils are not suitable for this purpose, and you wish to avoid chemical acids and citric acid, you might need to explore other types of mild, natural acidic ingredients if available and suitable for your specific formulation type, but essential oils themselves will not achieve the desired pH reduction.
