Using SepGEL 305 as a Thickener in Conditioner

SepGEL 305 is a versatile ingredient that functions as both a cream binder (emulsifier) and a thickener. It is easy to use as it does not require heat and works within a wide pH range (3-11).

However, SepGEL 305 has some limitations that make it generally unsuitable for typical conditioner formulations:

• Oil Tolerance: It can only handle up to 5% oil content in a formulation.
• Electrolyte Sensitivity: It does not tolerate electrolytes.

Typical hair conditioners often contain higher levels of oils, silicones, and cationic conditioning agents (which are electrolytes) to provide softening and detangling benefits. Due to its low oil tolerance and sensitivity to electrolytes, SepGEL 305 would likely not perform effectively as the primary thickener or emulsifier in most standard conditioner recipes. It is better suited for formulations like creams, lotions, serums, or gels with lower oil phases and no significant electrolyte content.
