Using AA-2G in a Serum Formulation

Ascorbyl Glucoside (AA-2G) is a stable, water-soluble form of Vitamin C suitable for use in serum formulations at a recommended rate of 2-10%. For optimal stability, the final serum pH should be adjusted to the range of 6.5-6.8.

To help protect AA-2G from deterioration, it is recommended to include antioxidants and UV protectors in the formula.

• ActiveProtec™ UV: This product helps protect the formula from deterioration caused by UV light and free radicals. The recommended usage rate is 0.5-4.0%, with 1-2% being the generally recommended range.
• ActiveProtec™ OX: This is a high-performance antioxidant that helps prevent oxidation and discoloration, which is particularly beneficial for formulas containing Vitamin C. The recommended usage rate is 0.1-1.0%. Note that the formula pH must be above 4 when using ActiveProtec™ OX.

Regarding the use of Sodium Metabisulfite as a preservative at 0.2%, the product description indicates that Sodium Metabisulfite acts as an antioxidant for maintaining ingredient quality and lists its INCI name as "Sodium Metabisulfite (as preservative, usage up to 0.2%)". The recommended usage rate is 0.1-0.2%, with 0.2% being the recommended amount. Therefore, using Sodium Metabisulfite at 0.2% is within the suggested usage range for its antioxidant/preservative function, primarily to help maintain the quality of the ingredients like Vitamin C.

When formulating, ensure the pH is correctly adjusted for AA-2G stability (6.5-6.8) and above 4 for ActiveProtec™ OX. While Sodium Metabisulfite offers antioxidant/preservative benefits, consider if a broad-spectrum preservative system is also needed for microbial protection depending on your full formulation.
