Question

I want to make a gel for acne spot treatment and would like to use Retinal A as an ingredient. I'm not sure if Retinal A is a natural extract or a synthetic ingredient, and if it is effective. Are there any other active ingredients you would recommend?

Answer

Acne Spot Treatment Ingredients

Regarding your question about using Retinal A (Retinaldehyde) in an acne spot treatment gel:

Retinaldehyde is a form of Vitamin A. While Vitamin A can be found in nature, the form used in cosmetics like Retinaldehyde is typically produced synthetically for stability and purity. It is not considered a natural extract in the same way as a plant extract.

Retinaldehyde is highly effective for treating acne. It is a potent retinoid that converts to Retinoic Acid in the skin, which helps to:

  • Increase cell turnover, preventing pores from becoming clogged.
  • Reduce inflammation.
  • Decrease oil production.
  • Improve the appearance of acne scars and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.

Products like Retinal (Retinaldehyde) and Retinal-EZ™ (Encapsulated Water Dispersible Retinal) are examples of this ingredient. Encapsulated forms like Retinal-EZ™ can offer better stability and potentially reduced irritation.

Other Recommended Active Ingredients for Acne Spot Treatments

Besides Retinaldehyde, several other active ingredients are highly effective for acne and can be considered for your gel formulation:

When formulating an acne spot treatment gel, you can choose one or a combination of these active ingredients based on the desired strength and target concerns (e.g., clogged pores, inflammation, bacteria). Remember to follow recommended usage rates for each ingredient.
