Adding AHA and Vitamins to Traditional Bar Soap Formulation
Question
I want to add AHA and vitamins to my herbal bar soap formulation (honey, turmeric, tamarind, mahad). My bar soap is a traditional type made with Sodium Hydroxide. Is it possible to add acidic ingredients like AHA and vitamins to this type of soap? If not, why? Also, how effective are bar soaps generally for claims like skin whitening, acne treatment, and pore tightening, considering they are wash-off products?
Answer
Regarding your question about adding AHA and vitamins to your herbal bar soap (honey, turmeric, tamarind, mahad formulas):
Based on the information provided by our staff, traditional bar soaps made using Sodium Hydroxide are highly alkaline. Adding acidic ingredients like AHA to this type of soap base is not possible because it will significantly lower the pH. This change in pH prevents the soap from solidifying properly.
Therefore, it is not recommended or feasible to add AHA to your traditional bar soap formula.
Achieving significant skin whitening, acne treatment, or pore tightening effects with a wash-off product like bar soap can also be challenging due to the limited contact time the ingredients have with the skin. For these specific goals, leave-on products (like serums or creams) or other types of cleansers formulated at an appropriate pH might be more effective.
