Question

I would like to inquire about adding color, jojoba beads, and fragrance to the alcohol hand sanitizer base from your store. Could you please recommend suitable colors and fragrances? Also, how should I filter the jojoba beads from the liquid they are supplied in? Thank you.

Answer

Adding Color, Jojoba Beads, and Fragrance to Alcohol Hand Sanitizer Base

Here's how you can add color, jojoba beads, and fragrance to your alcohol-based hand sanitizer base:

Adding Color

For coloring an alcohol-based hand sanitizer, water-soluble colors are generally suitable as alcohol bases often contain some water. Colors like the EasyWash™ range (e.g., Yellow Tartrazine (CI19140) EasyWash™, Black Color EasyWash™, Caramel Color EasyWash™) are highly concentrated liquids. Add them drop by drop to achieve your desired shade, mixing gently each time.

Adding Jojoba Beads

Beads such as Oil Beads or Vitamin E Beads (like Gold Vitamin E Beads (Wet) or Red Vitamin E Beads (Dry)) and Gold Pellet Beads can be added to your hand sanitizer base. These beads are typically added in the final step of your formulation. Mix them in gently to disperse them evenly throughout the base. Avoid vigorous stirring or high heat, as this can cause the beads to break.

Regarding filtering the beads from the liquid they come in (for "wet" types), this liquid is usually added to keep the beads hydrated during storage. You do not need to filter it out; add the beads along with this liquid directly into your hand sanitizer base.

Adding Fragrance

Adding fragrance to a high-alcohol base can be tricky. Standard fragrance oils may not fully dissolve and could cause cloudiness or separation. You might need to use a solubilizer to help the fragrance oil disperse properly in the alcohol base. Alternatively, water-soluble fragrances, if available, would mix in more easily without needing a solubilizer.

General Mixing

Always add color, beads, and fragrance in the final step after your base is prepared. Mix gently by hand or with a low-speed mixer to ensure everything is incorporated without damaging the beads or creating excessive foam.
