Question

Based on my physical sunscreen formula containing Zinc Oxide (5%), Titanium Dioxide (5%), Cyclomethicone (15%), Dimethicone (10%), Light Cream Maker (1.5%), and Water (53.5%), I want to replace 10% Dimethicone with 10% LipidSoft. Which step should I add the LipidSoft in?

Answer

Based on the formulation you provided and your question about adding LipidSoft, LipidSoft is an emollient which is typically mixed with the oil/silicone phase ingredients. In your original steps, Step A is where the oil/silicone phase (Cyclomethicone, Dimethicone) is mixed with the solid sunscreens (Zinc Oxide, Titanium Dioxide).

Therefore, when replacing 10% Dimethicone with 10% LipidSoft, you should add the LipidSoft in Step A.

The modified steps would be:

  • Step A: Mix Zinc Oxide (5%), Titanium Dioxide (5%), Cyclomethicone (15%), Dimethicone (10%), and LipidSoft (10%). Blend for 5-10 minutes to ensure Zinc Oxide and Titanium Dioxide are fully dispersed.
  • Step B: Add Light Cream Maker (1.5%) and blend for 1 minute.
  • Step C: Add Water (53.5%) gradually and continue blending until the cream thickens.
