Adding Flavor/Fragrance to Lip Balm (Solubility) and Loose Powder

คำถาม

I bought several food-grade flavors to add to lip balm because I thought they would be safe if ingested. However, they separated from the balm base.

I suspect they are not soluble in oil, so I tried putting them in water, and they didn't separate. This led me to believe they are water-soluble.

I'm finding it very difficult to find food-grade flavors that are oil-soluble. The website http://www.1stopbakery.com/store/produc ... 57-th.html mostly lists flavors soluble in water.

Could you confirm if food-grade flavors for lip balm must be oil-soluble, and where I can find them?

Also, how can I add liquid fragrance to loose powder?

Answer to Your Questions

Hello, thank you for your questions regarding fragrances for lip products and loose powder.

1. Fragrance for Lip Balm, Lipstick, and Lip Gloss

For products applied to the lips, such as lip balm, lipstick, and lip gloss, it is essential to use food-grade flavors or fragrances. This is because there is a possibility of ingesting the product during use, and food-grade ingredients are safe for consumption.

Regarding the solubility, as discussed, since lip balm and similar products are typically oil-based, the flavor or fragrance you use must be oil-soluble. Using a water-soluble flavor will cause it to separate from the oil base, resulting in an uneven product.

Our website offers a variety of suitable oil-soluble food-grade flavors. Examples include:

  • Strawberry Flavor (Oil Soluble, Vegetable Oil Base)
  • Creamy Vanilla Flavor (Oil Soluble, Vegetable Oil Base)
  • Green Apple Flavor (Oil Soluble, Vegetable Oil Base)
  • Milk Flavor (Oil Soluble, Vegetable Oil Base)

You can find these and other oil-soluble options on the website.

2. Adding Liquid Fragrance to Loose Powder

To incorporate liquid fragrance into loose powder, you can follow this method:

  1. Add the liquid fragrance drop by drop directly into the powder base.
  2. Mix or shake the powder well to distribute the fragrance.
  3. Close the container and let it sit for a while to allow the fragrance to evaporate and adhere thoroughly to the powder particles.

If you find that the fragrance is difficult to disperse or adhere to your specific powder base, you can try mixing the liquid fragrance with a small amount of cornstarch first until the cornstarch absorbs the fragrance. Then, mix this scented cornstarch into the rest of your powder base. This can help the fragrance bind better to the powder.
