Adding Mica Powder to Cream During Cool-Down

Question

I would like to know if Mica powder can be added to cream during the cool-down phase. I only want to add a very small amount, just enough to give the cream a light blue color to differentiate it from other formulas.

I don't want to add it to the Oil Phase because it is difficult to measure 0.05 grams with my scale which only has 1 decimal place.

Thank you.

Answer

Adding Mica Powder During Cool-Down Phase

Yes, it is possible to add Mica powder to your cream during the cool-down phase to impart a light color. Adding a small amount of pigment like Mica during this stage is a common practice, especially when dealing with very small quantities that are difficult to measure accurately in the oil phase.

Key Considerations:

  • Dispersion: The most important factor is ensuring the Mica powder is well-dispersed in the cream base to avoid speckling or uneven color. Even though Mica powders like the Blue / Violet / Red / Orange 10-60microns Mica are designed to disperse well, pre-dispersing the tiny amount of mica in a small portion of the cooled cream base before incorporating it into the main batch can help achieve a more uniform color.
  • Amount: As you mentioned using a very small amount (0.05g), proper dispersion is even more critical.

Using Mica powder, such as the Blue / Violet / Red / Orange 10-60microns Mica or other general Mica Powder options, can effectively add a subtle tint to your cream formulation.
