Adding SPF to Perfume

It is technically possible to add SPF ingredients to a perfume, especially an oil-based one. However, achieving a high SPF level like 50 might be challenging, and the practical sun protection benefit from applying perfume is generally limited compared to dedicated sunscreen products.

How to Add SPF to an Oil-Based Perfume

1. Choose Oil-Soluble Chemical Sunscreens: Select chemical sunscreen agents that can dissolve directly in oil. Examples include Octocrylene, Homosalate, and BEMT.
2. Use an Oil Base: Use an oil that can act as a base for both the sunscreen and the fragrance. Fractionated Coconut Oil is a suitable option as it is lightweight, easily absorbed, and can dissolve both chemical sunscreens and fragrance oils.
3. Formulation Structure: A basic structure could involve:
   • Fractionated Coconut Oil (as the base)
   • Chemical sunscreens (combined at a certain percentage, typically 10-15% for potential SPF, but achieving SPF 50 might require higher concentrations or specific combinations)
   • Fragrance oil (at the desired concentration)

Important Considerations

• SPF Level: Reaching SPF 50 in a perfume base is difficult and may require high concentrations of sunscreens, which could affect the texture, scent, and stability of the product.
• Application Method: Perfume is typically applied sparingly to pulse points, which does not provide even or sufficient coverage for effective sun protection across exposed skin areas.
• Stability: Ensure the chosen sunscreens are stable in the oil base and do not negatively interact with the fragrance.

While technically feasible, a perfume with SPF is unlikely to replace the need for a proper sunscreen when significant sun protection is required.
