Question

I am making a lotion and would like to add sunscreen and fragrance. Could you please advise on the following:

1. What is the maximum percentage of fragrance allowed by the FDA?
2. How can I make the fragrance in the lotion last longer?
3. Will adding sunscreen affect the fragrance?

Answer

Based on the staff's advice:

  • Adding Sunscreen: You can add sunscreen to your lotion. Recommended options are:

    • SPF Protect Ultra II (ID 1048): Use at 5% for an estimated SPF 15.
    • Titanium Dioxide 15nm Liquid (ID 724): This is another option; check the product details page for usage rates.
Both should be mixed into the oil phase of your formulation and are heat resistant.
  • Adding Fragrance:

    • There is no legal maximum percentage for fragrance in cosmetics in Thailand.
    • You can test adding fragrance starting at 1.0% and adjust according to your desired scent strength.
    • To help the fragrance last longer, consider using fixatives like Flora Fix (IDs 1502, 1631) or Last Fix. However, the longevity also depends significantly on the type of fragrance used (e.g., fruity scents tend to be shorter-lasting).
  • Interaction: Adding sunscreen does not affect the fragrance in your lotion.

You can definitely create a lotion with both sunscreen and long-lasting fragrance by following these guidelines.
