Adding Sunscreen to Lotion: Absorption and Texture Issues

Question

I want to formulate a nourishing body lotion with sunscreen. Will adding sunscreen ingredients make it difficult for the nourishing ingredients to absorb into the skin? If so, which sunscreen ingredient is suitable for a nourishing lotion with sunscreen?

Answer

Adding sunscreen ingredients to a nourishing body lotion can affect the absorption of nourishing ingredients, especially if used in high amounts that make the lotion thick and sticky. This can make it harder for other ingredients to penetrate the skin.

For a nourishing body lotion that requires light sun protection, we recommend considering SPF Protect Ultra™ III. This sunscreen ingredient is designed to be easily incorporated into formulas and is not sticky on the skin. It provides broad-spectrum protection against both UVB and UVA rays.

Using SPF Protect Ultra™ III at a rate of 10-15% as recommended will give the lotion an SPF value of approximately 20-50, which is sufficient for light daily sun protection without making the product too heavy or sticky. This allows the nourishing ingredients to still absorb well into the skin.
