Question

I have a hybrid sunscreen formula containing SPF Protect Ultra and Zinc Oxide. I plan to add Titanium Dioxide (nano easy dis version) to this formula.

  1. Is this formula correct?
  2. Will adding Titanium Dioxide enhance the effectiveness?
  3. I estimated the SPF/PA to be around SPF 41 / PA+++. Is this estimated SPF/PA accurate?

Answer

Regarding your formula and adding Titanium Dioxide:

  1. SPF/PA Calculation: Your calculation of SPF 41 / PA+++ is an estimate. As the staff mentioned, the actual SPF/PA value is likely higher than a simple sum due to the synergistic effect of combining different sunscreen agents. For an accurate value, laboratory testing is recommended.
  2. Effectiveness: Yes, adding Titanium Dioxide (specifically the nano easy dis version you mentioned) to your hybrid sunscreen formula, which already contains chemical filters (from SPF Protect Ultra) and Zinc Oxide, will enhance the overall sun protection. Titanium Dioxide is very effective at blocking UVB rays, and its inclusion helps provide broader spectrum coverage when combined with other filters that protect against UVA and UVB.
