Question

I have an existing cream formula for dry skin that moisturizes and reduces wrinkles. I want to add a whitening ingredient to this formula. Can you suggest a suitable ingredient, such as ChromaWhite™ (Dimethylmethoxy Chromanyl Palmitate), and provide a revised formula and mixing steps for incorporating it?

Answer

Adding Whitening Ingredient to Your Dry Skin Cream Formula

To add a whitening ingredient to your existing cream formula that focuses on moisturizing and reducing wrinkles, you can do so by selecting a suitable active ingredient and adjusting the proportions of other ingredients to maintain a total of 100%.

We recommend ChromaWhite™ (Dimethylmethoxy Chromanyl Palmitate) as a good option to add whitening properties to your formula. It is highly effective in inhibiting melanin production, used at a low concentration of only 0.1-0.5%, making formula adjustment easy, and is highly stable.

Revised Cream Formula (Adding ChromaWhite™ 0.5%)

To achieve a total cream percentage of 100% when adding 0.5% ChromaWhite™, you will need to reduce other ingredients by 0.5%. It is common practice to reduce the Water percentage as it is the largest component in the formula.

Here is the revised formula:

  • Water: 70.5% (Reduced from original 71%)
  • Shea Butter Ultra Soft: 5%
  • Sweet Almond Oil: 5%
  • Vitamin B5: 3%
  • MOIST72: 3%
  • WaterLock: 2%
  • Repair Activator: 10%
  • Light Cream Maker™: 1%
  • ChromaWhite™: 0.5%

Total: 100%

Mixing Steps (Revised)

Follow the original mixing steps, adding a step for incorporating ChromaWhite™:

  1. Oil Phase: Combine Shea Butter Ultra Soft (gently warm if solid until liquid), Sweet Almond Oil, and Light Cream Maker™. Mix well.
  2. Water Phase: Combine Water, Vitamin B5, MOIST72, WaterLock, and Repair Activator. Stir or blend until the water-soluble ingredients are fully dissolved.
  3. Combine Phases: Gradually pour the water phase into the oil phase while continuously stirring or blending until the mixture emulsifies into a cream.
  4. Cooling: Allow the resulting cream to cool down.
  5. Add ChromaWhite™: Dissolve 0.5% ChromaWhite™ in a small amount of oil or ester (e.g., a small portion of Sweet Almond Oil or any type of LipidSoft™). Then, add the dissolved ChromaWhite™ mixture to the cooled cream and stir or blend thoroughly until homogenous.

Caution: ChromaWhite™ should avoid high heat. It should be added in the final step after the cream has cooled down.

In addition to ChromaWhite™, other interesting whitening active ingredients include Tranexamic Acid, which is water-soluble and can be added directly to the water phase. However, using Tranexamic Acid at high concentrations may require consideration regarding potential irritation and regulatory requirements.
