Adjusting Anti-Wrinkle Cream Formula for Whitening and Different Skin Types
Question
I have adjusted the anti-wrinkle cream formula for normal and dry skin. Here is the revised formula:
- Distilled Water: 58%
- Shea Butter Ultra Soft: 5%
- Sweet Almond Oil: 5%
- Vitamin B5: 3%
- MOIST72: 3%
- WaterLock: 2%
- Repair Activator: 10%
- Activated Resorcinol™: 1%
- Light Cream Maker™: 1%
- LipidSoft: 2%
- Phenoxyethanol (safe preservative): 1%
Total: 101% (Note: The percentages listed sum to 101%, please verify)
I have replaced Vitamin B3 and GlucoBright with Activated Resorcinol™ because I want the formula to also help with whitening. I have a few questions:
- Is replacing Vitamin B3 and GlucoBright with Activated Resorcinol™ suitable for achieving whitening results?
- If this formula is used by someone with normal skin, which ingredients should be reduced or removed?
- If this formula is used by someone with oily skin, which ingredients should be reduced or removed?
Could you please provide some advice?
Answer
Formula Review and Adjustment Suggestions
Here is a review of your revised formula and suggestions for adjusting it for different skin types:
Revised Formula Analysis
Your revised formula is workable and addresses the goal of reducing wrinkles, moisturizing, and whitening. Replacing Vitamin B3 and Glucobright with Activated Resorcinol at 1% is an effective approach for whitening, as Activated Resorcinol is a potent skin brightening agent. However, please note that using Activated Resorcinol at the maximum recommended concentration of 1% for leave-on products can potentially cause skin irritation for some individuals. It might be beneficial to include an anti-irritant ingredient in the formula.
The formula still contains a significant amount of moisturizing ingredients like Shea Butter Ultra Soft, Sweet Almond Oil, Vitamin B5, MOIST72, and WaterLock. This makes it quite rich and well-suited for dry skin.
Reducing the Light Cream Maker to 1% should result in a lighter texture compared to your previous formula with 2%. The addition of 2% LipidSoft adds a bit more emollience. The final texture should be lighter than the first version, and it might be suitable for a pump bottle, but this depends on the overall viscosity achieved.
Adjusting for Normal Skin
For normal skin, the current formula might still feel a bit heavy due to the high oil content. To make it more suitable for normal skin, you can consider the following adjustments:
- Reduce the percentage of Shea Butter Ultra Soft and Sweet Almond Oil. You could try reducing each by 1-2%.
- Alternatively, replace some of the Shea Butter Ultra Soft or Sweet Almond Oil with a lighter emollient like LipidSoft Lite.
- The percentages of Vitamin B5, MOIST72, WaterLock, Repair Activator, Activated Resorcinol, Light Cream Maker, and Phenoxyethanol can generally remain the same.
Adjusting for Oily Skin
For oily skin, the current formula is likely too rich. Significant changes to the oil phase are needed:
- Remove Shea Butter Ultra Soft and Sweet Almond Oil entirely.
- Use a light, non-comedogenic emollient like LipidSoft Lite at a suitable percentage (e.g., 3-5%) to provide necessary emollience without feeling greasy.
- Consider reducing the percentage of MOIST72 (e.g., to 1-2%).
- Keep WaterLock at 1-2% as it helps prevent dehydration and can reduce irritation.
- Keep Vitamin B5, Repair Activator, Activated Resorcinol, Light Cream Maker, and Phenoxyethanol at the current percentages.
- You might also consider adding ingredients that help control oil or mattify the skin, although this was not specifically requested.
Remember to perform stability and challenge tests on your final formula before selling to ensure safety and efficacy and to meet FDA requirements.
