Adjusting Cream Texture and Smell, Sunscreen Mixing Steps

Asked by: pee166 On: April 06, 2016 Product Type: Cosmetics

Question

I have two formulations and would like to confirm the mixing steps and get advice on improving the texture and smell.

Formula 1 (Cream):

  • Water: 72.5%
  • Shea butter water soluble: 10%
  • Rice Vitamin: 2%
  • Vitamin B3: 3%
  • Ceramide Complex: 5%
  • Panthenol B5: 3%
  • MOIST72: 2%
  • Light Cream Maker: 1.5%
  • Phenoxyethanol SA: 1%

When using this cream, it feels dry, like I haven't applied moisturizer, although my skin doesn't feel tight. Overall, I'm somewhat satisfied that the skin doesn't feel dry after use, but I would prefer a texture that feels more moisturizing on the face but is not sticky. Also, how can I eliminate the rancid smell from Shea butter water soluble?

Formula 2 (Sunscreen):

  • LipidSoft™ Dry: 15%
  • Luxury Cream Maker™: 4%
  • SPF Protect Ultra: 20%
  • Water: 60%
  • Phenoxyethanol SA: 1%

Could you please confirm the correct mixing steps for this sunscreen formula?

Answer

Based on the formula and the staff's feedback, here are the mixing steps for your two formulations:

Formula 1 (Cream):
The staff correctly pointed out that Shea butter water soluble (ingredient 2) should be mixed into the water phase, as it is water-soluble. Here are the corrected steps:

  1. Water Phase: Combine the water (72.5%) with Shea butter water soluble (10%), Rice Vitamin (2%), Vitamin B3 (3%), Ceramide Complex (5%), Panthenol B5 (3%), and MOIST72 (2%). Mix well until all ingredients are dissolved or dispersed.
  2. Emulsifier Phase: Prepare the Light Cream Maker (1.5%) in a separate container.
  3. Emulsification: Gradually add the Water Phase (from step 1) to the Emulsifier Phase (from step 2) while stirring continuously until a smooth cream is formed.
  4. Cool Down Phase: Once the cream has formed and cooled down, add Phenoxyethanol SA (1%) and mix thoroughly.

Formula 2 (Sunscreen):
Your proposed steps for the sunscreen formula are correct, as confirmed by the staff. The staff also suggested using a slightly higher temperature for easier mixing.

  1. Combine LipidSoft™ Dry (15%) and Luxury Cream Maker™ (4%). Heat the mixture to 40-70°C (as suggested by the staff; 40°C is also acceptable).
  2. Add SPF Protect Ultra (20%) to the mixture from step 1 and mix until fully combined. This is your Oil Phase.
  3. Heat the water (60%) to the same temperature as the Oil Phase (40-70°C). This is your Water Phase.
  4. Gradually add the Water Phase (from step 3) to the Oil Phase (from step 2) while stirring continuously until a stable emulsion (cream) is formed.
  5. Allow the emulsion to cool down.
  6. Once cooled, add Phenoxyethanol SA (1%) and mix well.

Hope this helps with your mixing!
