Adjusting Herbal Massage Oil Texture: Reducing Viscosity and Stickiness

Question

I am making herbal massage oil for muscle aches and tight muscles using a base of sesame oil and cold-pressed coconut oil, infused with herbs like plai, wan, and turmeric.

After making it, I apply it for massage, but it absorbs slowly, and the oil texture is too heavy and sticky.

Furthermore, the cost of cold-pressed coconut oil is high.

Could you recommend alternative oils to replace sesame oil and cold-pressed coconut oil to make the oil lighter, easily absorbed, and non-sticky when applied?

Answer

How to Make Herbal Massage Oil Lighter

I understand the issue with your herbal massage oil formulation using sesame oil and cold-pressed coconut oil resulting in a heavy, slow-absorbing, and sticky texture, as well as the high cost of cold-pressed coconut oil. Both of these oils are naturally quite heavy and suitable for massages requiring long-lasting glide. However, if you want a lighter texture that absorbs more easily and is less sticky, you can use other lighter oils as alternatives.

Alternative oils that are lighter in texture, absorb well, and are often lower in cost than cold-pressed coconut oil include:

  • Fractionated Coconut Oil: This is coconut oil that has been processed to separate certain fatty acids, resulting in a clear, colorless, odorless oil with a very light texture. It absorbs into the skin excellently, is non-greasy, and does not go rancid easily. It is the best option for replacing cold-pressed coconut oil to lighten the texture and is an excellent carrier oil.
  • Sunflower Oil (High Omega, Refined): This is a medium-to-lightweight oil that absorbs well. It contains Vitamin E and Omega 6, 9 which help nourish the skin.
  • Rice Bran Oil (High Omega, Refined): This is a medium-to-lightweight oil containing the antioxidant Gamma Oryzanol and Omega 3, 6, 9. It helps nourish the skin to be soft and moisturized and absorbs well.
  • NaturalProfile™ Sweet Almond Oil (Cold-Pressed): A popular oil for massage, it has a medium texture that absorbs well and is rich in Vitamin E, helping to nourish the skin, reduce wrinkles, and scars.

Suggestions for Adjusting Your Formula:

  1. Replace Cold-Pressed Coconut Oil: Try using Fractionated Coconut Oil to replace all or part of the cold-pressed coconut oil to reduce the viscosity and heaviness of the base oil.
  2. Mix with Sesame Oil: You can still use sesame oil as a partial base ingredient and mix in other lighter oils such as Fractionated Coconut Oil, Sunflower Oil, Rice Bran Oil, or Sweet Almond Oil in desired proportions to adjust the texture to be lighter and more easily absorbed.
  3. Experiment with Ratios: Try mixing these lighter oils in different ratios to find the blend that provides the texture and absorption you like best.

Using lighter oils will help make your herbal massage oil more comfortable to use, absorb faster, leave no sticky feeling, and also help manage costs better.
