Question

I want to create a lotion formula for keratosis pilaris, based on AmLactin Moisturizing Lotion 12%. I need the formula to avoid parabens and mineral oil, and I want to remove Cyclomethicone from the base that gives a light texture and feels like powder after application.

Can I add Ceramide Complex to this formula?

Answer

Hello,

I understand you would like to adjust a lotion formula for keratosis pilaris, based on AmLactin Moisturizing Lotion 12%, but want to avoid certain ingredients like parabens and mineral oil, and prefer a lighter texture that feels smooth like powder after application.

AmLactin's main ingredient is Ammonium Lactate 12%, a form of AHA that helps exfoliate and moisturize the skin, which is effective for reducing keratosis pilaris. We have Sodium Lactate available, which works similarly and can be used as a substitute.

Based on the Staff's recommendations and your follow-up question about removing Cyclomethicone and adding Ceramide Complex to strengthen the skin barrier, the formula can be adjusted as follows:

  • Sodium Lactate 12% (Main active ingredient, helps exfoliate and moisturize)
  • Silky Serum Base 10-15% (Helps create a lightweight, easily absorbed texture)
  • Ceramide Complex / CeraTouch 1-5% (Helps strengthen the skin barrier)
  • Preservative 1% (Choose a paraben-free preservative)
  • Distilled Water Remaining percentage (Adjust to 100%)

Important Caution:
After adding Ceramide Complex / CeraTouch to the formula, please measure the pH of the formula. If the pH is higher than 7.0, gradually add an acid such as Glycolic Acid or Lactic Acid little by little to adjust the pH down to the range of 6.5-7.0. This is because Ceramide Complex may degrade in highly alkaline conditions.

This formula focuses on the key ingredient for keratosis pilaris (Sodium Lactate), while improving the texture with Silky Serum Base and strengthening the skin with Ceramide Complex, without the ingredients you are concerned about.

I hope this formula is helpful!
