Adjusting Oil-Based Formula for Dry Skin with Oily T-Zone / Switching to Cream
Question
I have very dry, flaky skin on my cheeks and forehead, but my T-zone is oily. I currently use a natural oil-based formula that works well for my dry skin, but it feels too heavy for daytime use.
How can I adjust this formula or create a new one to be lighter for daytime while still addressing my dry skin?
The original oil-based formula contains Rice Bran Wax and shea butter, among other oil/wax/butter components.
Answer
Hello,
I understand that having dry, flaky skin on the cheeks and forehead while also having an oily T-zone can be challenging to manage. It's great that your current natural oil-based formula has been effective for your dry skin!
Regarding your question about adjusting the formula to be lighter for daytime use, the team has two suggestions:
Adjust the concentration in the existing oil-based formula: Try reducing the proportion of Rice Bran Wax and Shea Butter, which are heavier ingredients. Replace them with Fractionated Coconut Oil, which is a lighter and more easily absorbed oil. If you find that the formula separates or doesn't mix well, you can add about 2% Oil Blender to help stabilize the oil/wax/butter components into a cream-like texture.
Switch to a cream formula (containing water): If the adjustment in the first option is still too heavy, you can change to a formula that includes water. This type of formula will be lighter but requires an Emulsifier (to combine water and oil) and a preservative.
- Emulsifier: The team recommends using Butter Cream Maker. This will help emulsify the oil and water phases together into a cream texture.
- Preservative: When adding water to a formula, a preservative is necessary to prevent microbial growth. The team recommends Mild Preserved Eco.
A sample cream formula structure would be approximately:
- Oil/wax/butter components from your original formula: 30%
- Butter Cream Maker: 4%
- Mild Preserved Eco: 1%
- Water: The remaining portion to reach 100%
The team suggests trying to adjust the existing oil-based formula first. If it's still too heavy, then consider switching to a cream formula. This is because the oil-based formula might provide better coverage for very dry skin.
Hope this advice is helpful! Feel free to ask if you have any further questions.
