Question
I have created a serum using the following formulation, but I find the texture absorbs slightly too slowly. Could you advise on which ingredients should be adjusted (increased or decreased) to improve the absorption speed and lighten the feel?
Formulation:
- Salmon DNA: 10.00%
- Absolue Soft Cream Base (compare to Lancome): 41.00%
- Methylsilanol Mannuronate: 4.00%
- Mild eco: 1.00%
- Dimethyl Isosorbide (DMI): 3.00%
- Acetyl Tetrapeptide-11: 3.00%
- Pep®-Elastyl (Palmitoyl Hexapeptide-12): 4.00%
- Syn-Ake: 4.00%
- Pep®-Mican (Acetyl Tetrapeptide-9): 3.00%
- Pep®-Geline (Trifluoroacetyl Tripeptide-2): 2.00%
- HRC-4000: 10.00%
- Epidermal Growth Factor: 2.00%
- Satin Cream Maker: 0.50%
- Skin barrier: 10.00%
- LipidSoft™ Cyclo (e.q. Cetiol Ultimate): 2.00%
- Pure-Adenosine: 0.50%
- Total: 100.00%
Answer
Based on your current serum formulation, the main reason for the slow absorption and heavy feel is the use of a rich cream base and high concentrations of lipid-containing actives.
Here is a breakdown of the issues and recommendations for adjustment:
Primary Cause of Slow Absorption
- Absolue Soft Cream Base (41.00%): This is a cream base (ID: 10458) designed to be rich and "coat the skin well as a night cream." Using a cream base at 41% will inherently result in a cream-like, slow-absorbing texture, not a light serum.
- Skin-Barrier™ (10.00%): This liposomal ceramide complex (ID: 7564) contains oils (Olive Fruit Oil, Shea Butter). While excellent for barrier repair, 10% is the maximum recommended for problem skin and significantly contributes to the formula's richness and slow absorption.
- High Concentration of Solutions (Salmon DNA & HRC-4000™): High levels of polymer/DNA/collagen solutions (ID: 10660, ID: 125854) can sometimes leave a slightly sticky or film-forming residue, especially when combined with a rich base.
Recommendations for Adjustment
To achieve a lighter, faster-absorbing serum texture, you must replace the heavy base and reduce the richest active.
1. Change the Base (Most Important)
- REMOVE the Absolue Soft Cream Base (41.00%).
- REPLACE it with Distilled Water and a light gel maker to create a true serum texture.
| Ingredient | Original % | Recommended % | Change/Reason |
|---|---|---|---|
| Absolue Soft Cream Base | 41.00% | 0.00% | REMOVE. Primary cause of heavy texture. |
| Water (Distilled Water) | (Implicitly low) | ~38.50% | ADD. To replace the cream base. |
| Clear-Jel™ or Easy-Gel™ | 0.00% | 0.50% - 1.00% | ADD. A light gel maker to create a serum consistency. |
2. Adjust Rich/Lipid Components
- REDUCE Skin-Barrier™ (10.00%) to the general recommended usage rate of 5.00%. This will significantly reduce the lipid load and improve absorption.
- Keep LipidSoft™ Cyclo (2.00%) (ID: 7969) as it is a light, fast-spreading emollient.
3. Keep Other Actives
- Keep all other actives (Salmon DNA, HRC-4000™, Peptides, DMI, etc.) at their current concentrations for maximum efficacy, as the base change will resolve most of the absorption issues.
Example of Adjusted Formula
| Ingredient | New % | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Water (Distilled Water) | 38.50% | Replaces the cream base. |
| Clear-Jel™ (or Easy-Gel™) | 0.50% | Light gel maker for serum texture. |
| Salmon DNA | 10.00% | Keep. |
| Methylsilanol Mannuronate | 4.00% | Keep. |
| Mild eco | 1.00% | Keep. |
| Dimethyl Isosorbide (DMI) | 3.00% | Keep. |
| Acetyl Tetrapeptide-11 | 3.00% | Keep. |
| Pep®-Elastyl | 4.00% | Keep. |
| Syn-Ake | 4.00% | Keep. |
| Pep®-Mican | 3.00% | Keep. |
| Pep®-Geline | 2.00% | Keep. |
| HRC-4000™ | 10.00% | Keep. |
| Epidermal Growth Factor | 2.00% | Keep. |
| Satin Cream Maker | 0.50% | Keep for light emulsification. |
| Skin-Barrier™ | 5.00% | Reduced for lighter feel. |
| LipidSoft™ Cyclo | 2.00% | Keep. |
| Pure-Adenosine | 0.50% | Keep. |
| TOTAL | 100.00% |
