Question

How can I adjust the color of my sunscreen formulation, which currently uses Silk Mica Powder and Titanium Dioxide and appears white, to match various skin tones (light, medium, dark)? I am particularly interested in using ingredients like Beige Iron Oxides EasyMix™ and other cosmetic-grade iron oxides.

Answer

Adjusting Sunscreen Color for Skin Tones

You are using Silk Mica Powder and Titanium Dioxide in your sunscreen, which results in a white product. To create a range of skin tone shades (light, medium, and dark), you can incorporate cosmetic-grade iron oxides.

As suggested by the staff, Beige Iron Oxides EasyMix™ is an excellent base for creating skin tones. To achieve different shades, you can adjust the color by adding Yellow Iron Oxides EasyMix™, Red Iron Oxides EasyMix™, and Black Iron Oxides EasyMix™.

Here are example mixing ratios to achieve three different shades, using Titanium Dioxide FoundationPro™ as the white base (note: you are currently using a different type of Titanium Dioxide, so adjustments may be needed):

  • Shade 1 (Light):

    • Titanium Dioxide FoundationPro™: 3 parts
    • Beige Iron Oxides EasyMix™: 1 part
  • Shade 2 (Medium):

    • Titanium Dioxide FoundationPro™: 3.73 parts
    • Beige Iron Oxides EasyMix™: 1 part
    • Yellow Iron Oxides EasyMix™: 0.68 parts
    • Black Iron Oxides EasyMix™: 0.017 parts
  • Shade 3 (Dark):

    • Titanium Dioxide FoundationPro™: 4.12 parts
    • Beige Iron Oxides EasyMix™: 1 part
    • Yellow Iron Oxides EasyMix™: 1.04 parts
    • Red Iron Oxides EasyMix™: 0.2 parts
    • Black Iron Oxides EasyMix™: 0.04 parts

These ratios are starting points. You may need to experiment and adjust the proportions of the iron oxides to perfectly match the desired shades for your specific formulation and the type of Titanium Dioxide you are using.
