Question

Regarding a thick texture issue with a Water-in-Oil sunscreen formulation using Water-in-Oil EZ:

If the cream is too thick and the staff recommends increasing the percentage of Water-in-Oil EZ to 1.0% and adding oil phase ingredients like Dimethicone to 5% and LipidSoft CC to 5-7% to make the texture less thick:

  • Can these additional oil phase ingredients be added to the cream that has already been made?
  • Should the recommended usage percentage for Silicone (Dimethicone) and LipidSoft on the website be updated based on this adjustment?

Answer

Regarding the issue with your second sunscreen formula using Water-in-Oil EZ:

It is normal for the cream to become very thick as you add the water phase when using Water-in-Oil EZ. This is a characteristic behavior of this emulsifier.

To achieve a less thick texture, the staff recommended increasing the percentage of Water-in-Oil EZ to 1.0% and also increasing the oil phase ingredients. Specifically, they suggested increasing Dimethicone to 5% and LipidSoft CC to 5-7%.

You can add these additional oil phase ingredients to the cream you have already made.

Please note that based on your feedback, the recommended usage rates for Silicone (Dimethicone) and LipidSoft on the website will be updated.
