Alcohol-Free Air/Pillow Spray Formulation

This formulation uses alcohol-free Witch Hazel as the base and Polysorbate 20 to solubilize the essential oil.

Ingredients

• Essential Oil
• Polysorbate 20 (Tween 20)
• Witch Hazel (Alcohol Free)
• Optional: Preservative (highly recommended for water-based products)

Proportions

A common starting point for an air/pillow spray is to have the final essential oil concentration between 1-3%. The ratio of Polysorbate 20 to Essential Oil is crucial for proper solubilization. A ratio of 1:1 up to 2:1 (Polysorbate 20 to Essential Oil) is generally recommended. Using a 2:1 ratio of Polysorbate 20 to Essential Oil often provides better stability and clarity.

Let's use an example for a 100g batch with 1% essential oil concentration and a 2:1 ratio of Polysorbate 20 to Essential Oil:

• Essential Oil: 1g (1%)
• Polysorbate 20: 2g (2%)

• Witch Hazel: 97g (97%)

• (Note: Proportions can be adjusted based on desired scent strength and total batch size. Ensure the Polysorbate 20 amount is sufficient to fully solubilize the essential oil used.)*

Method

1. In a clean container, combine the Essential Oil and Polysorbate 20.
2. Stir or gently swirl the mixture thoroughly until the essential oil is completely dispersed in the Polysorbate 20. It should become a clear or slightly hazy mixture.
3. In a separate container, measure out the Witch Hazel.
4. Slowly add the Essential Oil/Polysorbate 20 mixture to the Witch Hazel while stirring continuously.
5. Continue stirring until the mixture is uniform.
6. If using a preservative, add it at this stage according to the supplier's recommended usage rate and mix well.
7. Pour the finished spray into a clean spray bottle.

Important Considerations

• Shake Before Use: Even with a solubilizer, some ingredients might separate over time. Always shake the bottle gently before each use to ensure even distribution of the essential oil.
• Preservation: Since this formulation is mostly water (from the Witch Hazel), it is prone to microbial growth. Adding a broad-spectrum preservative is highly recommended to prevent mold, yeast, and bacteria from growing, extending the shelf life and ensuring safety.
• Essential Oil Type: Some essential oils may require a higher ratio of Polysorbate 20 to be fully solubilized. If your spray appears cloudy or separates significantly, you may need to increase the amount of Polysorbate 20.
• Witch Hazel Quality: Ensure you are using a high-quality, alcohol-free Witch Hazel distillate.
