Alcohol-Free Body Spray Formulation Issues and Alternatives

Question

I am developing an alcohol-free body spray formulation using Flora Solve Clear.

  1. Can I use only fragrance and Flora Solve Clear to create a sprayable body mist, and will the scent diffuse well?
  2. Does Flora Solve Clear have a scent that could interfere with the fragrance?
  3. Can I mix fragrance, Flora Solve Clear, and Dipropylene Glycol? Are there other fixatives you can recommend to make the scent last longer?

Answer

Alcohol-Free Body Spray Formulation

Based on the properties of Flora Solve Clear and previous information, here are the answers to your questions:

  1. Using only fragrance + Flora Solve Clear for a sprayable body mist: While Flora Solve Clear can effectively solubilize fragrance in water without alcohol, achieving a high fragrance concentration (typically 15-20% for a body spray) would require a very high proportion of Flora Solve Clear (2-5 times the amount of fragrance). This high concentration of Flora Solve Clear would likely result in a mixture that is too viscous to be easily sprayed, limiting its effectiveness as a body spray. The scent diffusion might also be less volatile compared to an alcohol-based spray.

  2. Does Flora Solve Clear have a scent that interferes with the fragrance? Flora Solve Clear is designed to be clear, colorless, and odorless, specifically to avoid interfering with the scent of the fragrance or essential oil being solubilized.

  3. Mixing fragrance + Flora Solve Clear + Dipropylene Glycol and alternative fixatives:

    • Mixing: You can mix fragrance, Flora Solve Clear, and Dipropylene Glycol (DPG). DPG is a good solvent for fragrances and also acts as a fixative, helping to slow down the evaporation rate of the fragrance and extend its longevity. However, the challenge remains in keeping the mixture sprayable if a high concentration of fragrance is desired using Flora Solve Clear as the primary base.
    • Alternative Bases: For an alcohol-free body spray that is easily sprayable, consider using an oil-based carrier like Fractionated Coconut Oil. Fractionated Coconut Oil is a lightweight, non-greasy oil that is excellent for diluting fragrance oils and can be sprayed. You can add fragrance and DPG to Fractionated Coconut Oil.
    • Other Fixatives: Besides Dipropylene Glycol, several other ingredients can act as fixatives to help your fragrance last longer. These include certain natural resinoids and synthetic aroma chemicals. Some examples are Styrax Resinoid, Labdanum Absolute, Benzoin Resinoid (Sumatra), Vetimoss, and Cassiffix. These can be added in small amounts to your fragrance blend to help anchor the scent.

In summary, while Flora Solve Clear is effective for solubilizing fragrance in water, it may not be the best choice for a sprayable body mist at typical fragrance concentrations due to viscosity issues. Using an oil base like Fractionated Coconut Oil combined with fragrance, DPG, and potentially other fixatives would likely yield a more suitable sprayable product with improved scent longevity.
