คำถาม

I would like to inquire about making an alcohol-free water-based perfume. Alcohol has a very strong smell when sprayed.

I have a formula for a perfume from an American brand which is water-based:

  • Alcohol Denat.
  • Water
  • Fragrance
  • Propylene Glycol
  • Glycerin
  • Butyl methoxydibenzoyl-methane
  • Ethyhexyl Methoxycinnamate
  • PPG-26-Buteth-26
  • Ethythexyl Salicylate
  • PEG-40 Hydrogenated castor oil
  • Chamomilla badensis leaf extract
  • Butylphenyl methyl-propional
  • Citral
  • Citronellol
  • Geraniol
  • Hydrozycitronellal
  • Isoeugenol
  • Limonene
  • Lin alool
  • Red33(CI17200)
  • Yellow5

Could you please tell me what the ingredients are and their functions? I have tried researching some of them but couldn't find information. I would like to share this formula with others interested in mixing their own perfumes.

Making Alcohol-Free Water-Based Perfume

Yes, it is possible to create alcohol-free water-based perfumes. Alcohol is commonly used in traditional perfumes as a solvent and to help diffuse the fragrance, but alternative ingredients can be used to achieve a water-based formula without the strong scent of alcohol.

To make a water-based perfume without alcohol, the key is to use a solubilizer. Fragrance oils are not naturally soluble in water, so a solubilizer helps to disperse the oil evenly throughout the water, preventing separation.

Let's look at the ingredients you provided from the American perfume formula and their functions:

  • Alcohol Denat.: Denatured alcohol. While this is listed, in an alcohol-free formula, this would be omitted or replaced.
  • Water: The main base of a water-based perfume.
  • Fragrance: The perfume oil blend that provides the scent.
  • Propylene Glycol, Glycerin: These act as humectants (attract moisture) and can also help slightly with dissolving some ingredients. They can contribute to a smoother feel.
  • Butyl Methoxydibenzoylmethane, Ethylhexyl Methoxycinnamate, Ethylhexyl Salicylate: These are UV filters, included to protect the fragrance and color from degradation by sunlight.
  • PPG-26-Buteth-26, PEG-40 Hydrogenated Castor Oil: These are solubilizers. They are crucial for dispersing the fragrance oil in the water base.
  • Chamomilla badensis leaf extract: This appears to be a typo. It is likely Chamomilla Recutita (Matricaria Chamomilla) Flower Extract (Chamomile Extract), often used for its soothing properties.
  • Butylphenyl Methylpropional, Citral, Citronellol, Geraniol, Hydroxycitronellal, Isoeugenol, Limonene, Linalool: These are fragrance components, often listed separately because they are potential allergens.
  • Red33 (CI 17200), Yellow5: Colorants used to give the perfume its desired color.

Key Ingredients for Alcohol-Free Water-Based Perfume:

  1. Water: Purified or distilled water is recommended.
  2. Fragrance Oil: Your chosen perfume oil blend.
  3. Solubilizer: Essential for mixing oil and water. Options include:
    • Flora Solve™ Clear (Product ID: 718): A popular solubilizer specifically designed for fragrances in water bases.
    • PEG-40 Hydrogenated Castor Oil (Product ID: 738): Another effective solubilizer.
    • PPG-6-Decyltetradeceth-30 (Product ID: 6953): Also functions as a solubilizer.
    • Polysorbate 20 (Product ID: 175) or Polysorbate 80 (Product ID: 176): Common solubilizers, though may sometimes cause slight cloudiness depending on the fragrance.
  4. Preservative: Crucial for any water-based product to prevent microbial growth. Examples include:
    • Mild Preserved™ COS (Product ID: 33939)
    • NaturePreserve™ LB2 (Product ID: 127320)
  5. Optional Ingredients: Such as Glycerin (Product ID: 143) or Propylene Glycol (Product ID: 138) for moisture and texture, or Chamomile Water (Product ID: 1308) for added benefits and a subtle scent.

Basic Steps for Formulation:

  1. Mix the fragrance oil with the chosen solubilizer in the recommended ratio (this ratio can vary depending on the specific solubilizer and fragrance, often requiring testing).
  2. Slowly add the water (and any water-soluble ingredients like glycerin or chamomile water) to the fragrance/solubilizer mixture while stirring gently until clear and fully dispersed.
  3. Add the preservative and any other optional ingredients, stirring to combine.
  4. Adjust pH if necessary (check the requirements of your preservative).
  5. Filter if desired and bottle.

By using a suitable solubilizer and preservative, you can create a stable and pleasant alcohol-free water-based perfume.
