Alternative Carrier Oils for Lighter Herbal Massage Oil
Question
I am seeking advice on making herbal massage oil for muscle aches and tension. Currently, I use sesame oil + cold-pressed coconut oil and boil herbs such as plai, wan, and turmeric in them.
When the oil is finished and used for massage, it absorbs slowly, and the texture is too heavy and viscous. Additionally, the cost of cold-pressed coconut oil is high.
Could you please recommend alternative oils to replace or reduce the amount of sesame oil + cold-pressed coconut oil?
I am looking for an oil that has a lighter texture, is easily absorbed when applied, and is not sticky. Thank you very much.
Answer
Alternative Carrier Oils for Herbal Massage Oil
Based on your need for a lighter, faster-absorbing, less sticky, and potentially more cost-effective oil base for your herbal massage oil, here are some alternative carrier oils you can consider using instead of or blended with sesame oil and cold-pressed coconut oil:
Fractionated Coconut Oil: This is an excellent option. Unlike virgin or cold-pressed coconut oil, fractionated coconut oil is processed to remove long-chain fatty acids, resulting in a liquid oil that is very lightweight, non-greasy, and easily absorbed by the skin. It's a popular choice for massage oils and as a carrier for essential oils because it doesn't feel heavy or sticky and has a very long shelf life without going rancid. It is generally more cost-effective than cold-pressed oils.
Sweet Almond Oil: This oil is widely used in massage blends because it is well-absorbed and helps moisturize the skin. While slightly richer than fractionated coconut oil, it is still considerably lighter than many other oils and is less likely to leave a heavy, greasy feeling compared to some cold-pressed oils.
Rice Bran Oil (Refined): Refined rice bran oil is another good option. It has a relatively light texture and is easily absorbed. It contains beneficial fatty acids and antioxidants. Refined oils are typically lighter in feel and less expensive than their unrefined or cold-pressed counterparts.
Sunflower Oil (Refined): Similar to rice bran oil, refined sunflower oil is a light, easily absorbed oil rich in fatty acids and Vitamin E. It's a cost-effective base oil that can help reduce the heavy feel of your massage oil.
Recommendation:
For the lightest feel and fastest absorption, Fractionated Coconut Oil is likely your best choice to replace or significantly reduce the amount of cold-pressed coconut oil and sesame oil. You can use it as the sole base oil or blend it with a smaller amount of your current oils or other suggested alternatives to achieve your desired texture.
Using these lighter oils should help your herbal massage oil feel less heavy, absorb more quickly, and reduce the sticky residue, while also potentially lowering your production costs.
