Question

I used AnyGel to create a gel texture. When I added an acidic substance, the gel turned into a paste-like consistency. Are there any other ingredients you can recommend for acidic formulations?

Answer

Alternative Gel Makers for Acidic Formulas

It sounds like the acidic ingredient you added caused the AnyGel™ (Dehydroxanthan Gum) to lose its thickening ability, resulting in a paste-like texture. Dehydroxanthan Gum is generally not stable in highly acidic conditions.

To create a stable gel in an acidic formula, you need to use a thickener that is resistant to low pH. Here are a few options that are suitable for acidic environments:

  • ThixoGel™ (Thixotropic Gel Maker): This thickener is resistant to both acid and electrolytes and works well in a wide pH range of 2-10. It creates a thixotropic gel texture.
  • Sepimax Zen: Known for its high tolerance to both salt and pH, making it suitable for acidic formulations.
  • Hydroxyethyl Acrylate/Sodium Acryloyldimethyl Taurate Copolymer: This polymer can create gels in a pH range of 3-12, offering good stability in moderately acidic conditions.
  • CreamMaker Acid™: This ingredient is specifically developed as an emulsifier and thickener for low pH, acid-based formulations, such as those containing AHAs.

Choose the thickener that best suits the specific pH level and other ingredients in your formula. Always test the stability of the final formulation.
