Question

I am using Butylated Hydroxy Toluene (BHT) in my formulation as an antioxidant. What are some suitable alternatives for BHT that can perform the same antioxidant function? What are the recommended usage rates for these alternatives?

Answer

Alternatives for Butylated Hydroxy Toluene (BHT)

Butylated Hydroxy Toluene (BHT) is commonly used as an antioxidant in formulations. If you are using BHT for its antioxidant properties, Vitamin E Acetate (Tocopheryl Acetate) is a suitable alternative.

Based on product information, Vitamin E Acetate helps protect ingredients from deterioration due to oxidation. It is available in both oil-soluble and water-soluble forms.

For use as an antioxidant to protect other oils in a formula, a recommended usage rate is 0.01%. If used for its antioxidant benefits on the skin, a usage rate of 0.1-0.5% is suggested. The total usage rate can be up to 1%. Using more than 0.5% might result in a sticky feeling on the skin.

Other types of antioxidants are also available, including dl-alpha Tocopherol, Rosemary Oleoresin Extract, and various Protec™ types, each offering different characteristics and levels of efficiency.
