Aristoflex AVC as Emulsifier/Stabilizer with Silicones
Question
Can Aristoflex AVC be used as an emulsifier or stabilizer in formulations containing silicones, and what are its limitations?
Answer
Aristoflex AVC and Silicones
Aristoflex AVC (Ammonium Acryloyldimethyltaurate/VP Copolymer) is primarily a gel-forming agent and thickener for the water phase. It can also function as a stabilizer and can emulsify a limited amount of oil (around 15-20%) in an O/W emulsion.
While Aristoflex AVC can help stabilize formulations containing oil phases, including some silicones, it is not a dedicated silicone emulsifier. Silicones, like Trifluoropropyl Dimethicone/Trifluoropropyl Divinyldimethicone Crosspolymer, often require specific emulsifiers designed for silicone chemistry to create stable emulsions, especially at higher concentrations.
Therefore, while you might be able to use Aristoflex AVC in a formula that contains silicone, it may not be sufficient to emulsify a significant silicone phase on its own. It's better suited for gelling the water phase and stabilizing O/W emulsions with moderate oil content. For formulas with high silicone content, consider using emulsifiers specifically recommended for silicones.
