Betaine's effect on Allantoin solubility in water

Question

Regarding the statement that Betaine can help increase the solubility of Allantoin, could you please clarify what "increase" means in this context? Does it mean:

  • Using Allantoin up to the existing limit of 0.5% in water, but Betaine helps it dissolve easier and faster?
  • Being able to use Allantoin at a concentration higher than 0.5% in water because Betaine helps increase its solubility limit?

Thank you very much.

Answer

Betaine does help increase the solubility of Allantoin in water. It doesn't just make it dissolve easier or faster within the existing limit. Betaine helps to dissolve a higher amount of Allantoin in water than the 0.5% limit at room temperature, which is the solubility limit of Allantoin in plain water. Using Betaine together will allow formulations to use Allantoin at higher concentrations for better efficacy.
