BHA Toner Formulation: Salicylic Acid Solubility Issue

Asked by: pearbaker On: October 28, 2017 Product Type: Cosmetics

Question

I would like to make a BHA toner with the following formula:

  • Salicylic Acid 2%
  • 1,2-hexanediol 3%
  • Polysorbate 20 3%
  • Water 92%

Is this formula feasible? What are the potential issues with this formulation, and are there alternative ingredients or methods to achieve a clear liquid toner?

Answer

Regarding your BHA Toner formula:

Based on the staff's response, the proposed formula with 2% BHA (Salicylic Acid), 3% 1,2-hexanediol, 3% Polysorbate 20, and 92% water is not feasible.

This is because regular Salicylic Acid requires a sufficient amount of a suitable solvent like Propylene Glycol to dissolve properly. 1,2-Hexanediol cannot be used as a substitute for Propylene Glycol for this purpose.

The staff recommended considering Encapsulated Salicylic Acid (Liquid, Timed-Release) as an alternative for creating a clear, liquid toner formulation. You can find example formulas for this ingredient on its product details page.
